Does anyone know why the traffic officers in Windhoek have been withdrawn from service at intersections? If I’m not mistaken this was confirmed as a fact by a senior official a week or so ago. This seems to contribute hugely to the present congestion on our roads. Leaving aside parking tickets my experience is that MOST of the contraventions of traffic laws happen at intersections! This seems to be an idiotic decision to me.

This was probably THE most irresponsible decision made in the last 10 years. Mind you the only time I ever see traffic cops is or rather was on a Friday morning when the new recruits are practicing at the Sam Nujoma / Nelson Mandela crossing....

I think its not so bad , they just blocked the flow of traffic , making it a endless line to wait for your turn , it goes faster when they are not there. I tested it and actually wanted to send a womf about this myself.

I agree, another idiotic decision by those in charge of our city, not to mention those in charge of our incompetent Government.
The City Police Traffic Officers now solely exist for the pleasure of Government / Presidential Motorcades. If you travel from the old Statehouse to the new Statehouse during lunch time (say 12 to 14:00) you will see at nearly every intersection / crossing a Traffic Officer and a Nampol special with his / her AK47. So Mr President can go home for lunch.
In Johannesburg they have Pointsmen, who are trained to regulate traffic flow at busy intersections during rush hours. Sponsored by Outsurance and provided with Scooters, these guys go from one intersection to the next, regulating traffic where they are needed.
Maybe our incompetent, oh so understaffed Traffic Department can approach the big corporates to sponsor a program like the Pointsmen for Windhoek.
On the issue of Traffic Officers, according to Informante today, the Mayor of Tsumeb was busted in Windhoek recently, speeding near the cemetery, refused to hand over his licence etc, drove away, was followed and slapped with a N$ 800 fine.
Now me wonders, if that was me, as a lowly ordinary citizen, I would have probably been taken to jail straight away to appear in front of a Judge?
Just shows you, being a V.I.P (make of that what you want) does matter in this country.

I understand your take on it.. BUT
1. What is the effect on the traffic in areas where you do not travel. Here I can mention at least theree places: In Academia and at WHS where parents drop off and pick up their children before and after school and areas where roads are closed.
2. What are those traffic officers [who did those services before] now employed?
3. Can’t we expect that those who made the decision explain the reasoning behind the decision.
